The Weekly Prayer Project - Gracious to Forgive

Welcome!

“Forgive us our debts. As we forgive our debtors.”

Jesus makes something clear: God’s forgiveness and our forgiveness of others are connected. Not because we earn forgiveness, but because forgiven people become forgiving people.

Gracious to Forgive

A Lord’s Prayer Litany

All: Our Father who art in heaven.
Pastor: We give thanks, heavenly Father, that we may with all boldness and confidence ask You as dear children ask their dear father.

All: Hallowed be Thy name.
Pastor: Your name is holy in itself, but we ask You to help us to keep it holy in our daily living.

All: Thy kingdom come.
Pastor: May Your kingdom come to us and expand. Increase our faith and the reach of Your Word. Extend Your kingdom of grace.

All: Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Pastor: Break every evil plan and purpose of the devil, the world, and our sinful nature, Lord, and move the leaders of nations to bring about the justice, peace, and freedom You have in mind for their citizens.

All: Give us this day our daily bread.
Pastor: O God, You give daily bread to everyone without our prayers, but we ask especially for those near and dear to us in their various needs. Bless them with food and shelter; care for the sick and sorrowing; and protection at home and abroad. Help us to receive with thanksgiving everything that supports our daily needs.

All: And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
Pastor: Were You to look at our sins, gracious God, You would deny our every request, for we sin continually. Because You have forgiven our debts, move us to forgive our debtors, those who sin, who trespass against us.

All: And lead us not into temptation.
Pastor: Temptations come to us from the devil, the world, and our sinful nature. Strengthen us so that we may overcome them and win the final victory. Give wisdom to parents and teachers so that our youth may see clearly the correct decisions to make.

All: But deliver us from evil.
Pastor: And lastly, Heavenly Father, deliver us from all evil of both body and soul and give us a blessed end in heaven forever.

All: For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Pastor: Amen, amen. Yes, yes, it shall be so!

Christ and Christ Crucified

The wages of my sin was death
You knew I couldn't pay the debt
You paid it with your final breath
Hallelujah hallelujah
You took the wrath that I deserved
Your holy blood broke every curse
Your mercy had the final word
Hallelujah hallelujah

We sing Christ and Christ crucified
In You we're raised from death to life
We sing Christ and Christ crucified
Hallelujah hallelujah

No sin is bigger than Your blood
No shame is stronger than Your love
You said it's finished it is done
Hallelujah hallelujah
Death couldn't keep You in the ground
You rose in power and took hell down
That power's living in us now
Hallelujah hallelujah

We sing Christ and Christ crucified
In You we're raised from death to life
We sing Christ and Christ crucified
Hallelujah hallelujah
We sing Christ and Christ crucified
In You we're raised from death to life
We sing Christ and Christ crucified
Hallelujah hallelujah

Death couldn't hold You down
Hell couldn't steal Your crown
There's resurrection power
In Your Name in Your Name
Let all the earth cry out
Lift up a holy sound
Give all the glory now
To Jesus' Name Jesus' Name
Death couldn't hold You down
Hell couldn't steal Your crown
There's resurrection power
In Your Name in Your Name
Let all the earth cry out
Lift up a holy sound
Give all the glory now
To Jesus' Name Jesus' Name

We sing Christ and Christ crucified
In You we're raised from death to life
We sing Christ and Christ crucified
Hallelujah hallelujah

Scripture Reading

Matthew 6:1-14 (NIV) - “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.”

“So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”

“This, then, is how you should pray:

‘Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one.’”

“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”

Message

Matthew 6:12 (NKJV) - “Forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.”

“The debtor owed a debt he could not pay and the employer paid a debt he did not owe.”

Ephesians 4:32 - “Be kind, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ has forgiven you."

“Forgive us our debts… as we forgive our debtors.”

Today Your Mercy Calls Us

Today Your mercy calls us
To wash away our sin
However great our trespass
Whatever we have been
However long from mercy
Our hearts have turned away
Your precious blood can wash us
And make us clean today

Today Your gate is open
And all who enter in
Shall find a Fathers welcome
And pardon for their sin
The past shall be forgotten
A present joy be given
A future grace be promised
A glorious crown in heaven

Today our Father calls us
His Holy Spirit waits
His blessed angels gather
Around the heavenly gates
No question will be asked us
How often we have come
Although we oft have wandered
It is our Fathers home

O all embracing Mercy
O ever open Door
What should we do without You
When heart and eye run o'er
When all things seem against us
To drive us to despair
We know one gate is open
One ear will hear our prayer

Confession / Forgiveness

Pastor: Therefore, we come to Almighty God's throne together right now, sincerely confessing our sins, and repenting of them.

All: Lord, I confess to You this day that I have sinned, I have trespassed, I have become indebted to You. There is a penalty for sin. I have chosen an unloving, selfish, and disgusting way to live.
I find faults with others;
I am quick to blame others when I am offended;
I hold grudges against others;
I have an unforgiving heart.

Forgive me for failing to remember that I have been forgiven. Help me, today, in the same way, to forgive those who have sinned against me.

Pastor: I have the greatest news to share with you! God’s message to us all is that Christ has lived a perfect life for all of us, and even more, He willingly died for all our sins on the cross, thereby reconciling us completely before God. Complete forgiveness of your sins is God’s gift of grace to you! We go forth praying: "Forgive us our trespasses, our sins, our debts as we forgive those who trespass against us, have sinned against us, our debtors.

Prayer

If you are in need of prayer, we would love the opportunity to pray with you! You can post a prayer on our online prayer wall, or submit a private prayer to our prayer team. Speak with Pastor Mark if you desire personal prayer.

Words of Institution / Communion Distribution

Holy Communion is offered to those who have been instructed in the Christian faith as confessed by the Lutheran Church. We believe that:

1) Jesus Christ is our only Lord and Savior from all sin, death, and the power of the devil;
2) the Risen Christ is really present in the Sacrament and that with the bread and wine we receive is His true Body and Blood; and
3) we resolve to dedicate our lives to the service of our Lord in His Body, the Church, by regular group worship, sacrificial giving, and thankful living.

If you have any questions please consult with the pastor.

Approach the altar on your own. Gluten-free hosts are available by requesting one from the communion server. Grape juice is located in the center ring of cups.

Blessing
