Holy Week Greeting

What does Jesus mean when he says "...before I enter my time of suffering." Let's investigate Luke 22 together.

Maundy Thursday Invocation

Pastor: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Lord, Jesus Christ, You eagerly desired to share the Passover with your disciples before your suffering. Be present with us as we receive Your gifts of forgiveness, life, salvation, and communion with You as we feast upon Your very body and blood in this bread and wine. Then guide us as we remember Your suffering for us; for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Jesus Christ Our Blessed Savior

Jesus Christ our blessed Savior
Turned away Gods wrath forever
By His bitter grief and woe
He saved us from the evil foe

He to pledge His love undying
Spreads this table grace supplying
Gives His body with the bread
And with the wine the blood He shed

Firmly hold with faith unshaken
That this food is to be taken
By the sick who are distressed
By hearts that long for peace and rest

If your heart this truth professes
And your mouth your sin confesses
You will be your Savior’s guest
Be at His banquet truly blest

Scripture Reading

Luke 22:7-13 (NIV) - Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.”

“Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked.

He replied, “As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.”

They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover.

Message

When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. Luke 22:14 (NIV)

And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.” Luke 22:15 (NIV)

“For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.” Luke 22:16 (NIV)

Confession and Forgiveness

Jesus said, “Take and eat; this is my body... Drink of it all of you. This is my blood ...for the forgiveness of sins.”
(Matthew 26:26-27)

The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod holds the Biblical teaching that in Communion we receive the true body and blood of Jesus Christ with the bread and wine for the forgiveness of sins. If you are a baptized Christian who has been instructed in the Biblical teaching of the real presence of the Christ in this meal and grace through faith in Christ, and if you agree with our confession of faith, please join with the fellowship of disciples in Holy Communion tonight.

“Everyone should examine themselves first, and then eat the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on themselves.”
(1 Corinthians 11:28-29)]

Draw Near and Take The Body and the Blood

Draw near and take the Body of the Lord
And drink the holy Blood for you outpoured
Offered was He for greatest and for least
Himself the victim and Himself the priest

He who His saints in this world rules and shields
To all believers Life eternal yields
With heavenly bread He makes the hungry whole
Gives living waters to the thirsting soul

Come forward then with faithful hearts sincere
And take the pledges of salvation here
O Lord our hearts with grateful thanks endow
As in this feast of love You bless us now

Communion Scripture

Luke 22:17-20 (NIV) - After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you."

"For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”

Communion Distribution

Christ the Life of All the Living

Christ the life of all the living
Christ the death of death our foe
Who Yourself for me once giving
To the darkest depths of woe
Through Your sufferings death and merit
Life eternal I inherit
Thousand thousand thanks are due
Dearest Jesus unto You

You have suffered great affliction
And have borne it patiently
Even death by crucifixion
Fully to atone for me
For you chose to be tormented
That my doom should be prevented
Thousand thousand thanks are due
Dearest Jesus unto You

Then for all that wrought my pardon
For the sorrows deep and sore
For the anguish in the garden
I will thank You evermore
Thank you for the groaning sighing
For the bleeding and the dying
For that last triumphant cry
Praise You evermore on high

The Stripping of the Altar

Romans 5:8 (NIV) “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

There is no blessing tonight.
Christ and the disciples left the meal and went to the Garden of Gethsemane.
Soon after, Jesus was arrested …and suffered.
