What to Expect

Greeting & Announcements

Ready to get to know Jesus better? If so, you need to hear from Him. The best way to do that is to open the gospels and simply join the crowds following Jesus around, listening to what He actually said, watching what He actually did, and really wrestling with what He means.

Invocation

Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. O God of love and mercy, how good it is to be here today and to hear once again that You are faithful, that You keep all Your promises of love towards us. Open our eyes to see Your goodness.

All: Open our ears to hear Your words of promise.

Pastor: Open our minds to understand how great Your love is for us.

All: Open our lips and our mouths to declare Your praise. Amen. (Psalm 51:15)

Scripture Reading

Matthew 17:1-8 (NIV) - After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah." While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!" When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them. "Get up," he said. "Don't be afraid." When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.

Message

Matthew 17:1-8 (NIV) - After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah." While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!" When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them. "Get up," he said. "Don't be afraid." When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.

Prayer

Submit Prayer

Confession & Forgiveness

Pastor: We join the disciples on the mountain today where we catch a glimpse of Moses and Elijah. We observe the Glory of our Savior.

All: Like the disciples, I am frightened to be in His presence because of my sinfulness.

Pastor: While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased. Listen to Him!”

Statement of Faith

All: I believe that the God of majesty and might has come into our midst. The Heavenly Father, strong to save, has created us, sheltered us, and revealed His glory to us through His Son with whom He is well-pleased.

I believe that Jesus Christ is the strong and gentle Son of God, who entered into death upon the cross and offers to us salvation through the empty tomb. Even as sinners, he leads us to the mountaintop, that we might see His glory as our Savior.

I believe that the Holy Spirit is our comforter. He speaks the strong Word and sounds to each of us the call to faith. He leads us down from the mountaintop and into the valley, there to work in us and through us, that the King of Glory might be seen in us.

Communion

The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod holds the Biblical teaching that in Communion we receive the true body and blood of Jesus Christ with the bread and wine for the forgiveness of sins. If you are a baptized Christian who has been instructed in the Biblical teaching of the real presence of the Christ in this meal and grace through faith in Christ, and if you agree with our confession of faith, please join with the fellowship of disciples in Holy Communion.

“Everyone should examine themselves first, and then eat the bread and drink of the cup. For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself.” (1 Corinthians 11:28-29)

The Lord’s Prayer

All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Blessing

Hebrews 4:12 (NIV) - For the word of God is alive and active.

Be Thou My Vision

Be Thou my Vision O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me save that Thou art
Thou my best Thought by day or by night
Waking or sleeping Thy presence my light

Be Thou my Wisdom and Thou my true Word
I ever with Thee and Thou with me Lord
Thou my great Father I Thy true son
Thou in me dwelling and I with Thee one

Riches I heed not nor man’s empty praise
Thou mine Inheritance now and always
Thou and Thou only be first in my heart
High King of Heaven my Treasure Thou art

High King of Heaven my victory won
May I reach Heaven’s joys O bright Heaven’s Sun
Heart of my own heart whatever befall
Still be my Vision O Ruler of all
Heart of my own heart whatever befall
Still be my Vision O Ruler of all
