Greeting & Announcements
Humility is found in a barn. Jesus was God, King of kings, the Creator of the universe, and He became a child, born in a lowly place. He never ceased being God, but He set aside the glory He had with His Father in heaven and humbled Himself to become a servant. What would happen if you joined Him as a family, becoming humble like Him? How would that impact others this Christmas?
Scriptures on Humility
Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
All: Amen.
Pastor: Clothe yourselves with humility toward one another
All: Because God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. (1 Peter 5:5)
Pastor: Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved,
All: Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. (Colossians 3:12)
Pastor: Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled,
All: And he who humbles himself will be exalted. (Luke 14:11)
Pastor: In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, He made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
All: And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death - even death on a cross! (Philippians 2:5-8)
Here I Am To Worship
Light of the world
You stepped down into darkness
Opened my eyes let me see
Beauty that made
This heart adore You
Hope of a life spent with You
Here I am to worship
Here I am to bow down
Here I am to say that
You're my God
You're altogether lovely
Altogether worthy
Altogether wonderful to me
King of all days
Oh so highly exalted
Glorious in heaven above
Humbly You came
To the earth You created
All for love's sake became poor
Here I am to worship
Here I am to bow down
Here I am to say that
You're my God
You're altogether lovely
Altogether worthy
Altogether wonderful to me
I'll never know how much it cost
To see my sin upon that cross
I'll never know how much it cost
To see my sin upon that cross
I'll never know how much it cost
To see my sin upon that cross
I'll never know how much it cost
To see my sin upon that cross
Here I am to worship
Here I am to bow down
Here I am to say that
You're my God
You're altogether lovely
Altogether worthy
Altogether wonderful to me
Here I am to worship
Here I am to bow down
Here I am to say that
You're my God
You're altogether lovely
Altogether worthy
Altogether wonderful to me
Scripture Reading
Micah 5:2-5 (NIV) - “But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”
Therefore Israel will be abandoned until the time when she who is in labor bears a son, and the rest of his brothers return to join the Israelites. He will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they will live securely, for then his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth. And he will be our peace.
STP KIDS Dismissal
STP KIDS is the Children’s Ministry at St. Peter’s Edina, designed for all children from 6 months to 10 years old (Grade 5). Older children are welcome to participate as helpers. Our vision is to partner with parents in raising up a generation of children that will seek their God-given Kingdom mission and impact their world for Jesus!
Message
“In the fullness of time.”
Galatians 4:4 (ESV) - But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law
Philippians 2:5-8 (MSG) - Think of yourselves the way Christ Jesus thought of himself. He had equal status with God but didn't think so much of himself that he had to cling to the advantages of that status no matter what. Not at all. When the time came, he set aside the privileges of deity and took on the status of a slave, became human! Having become human, he stayed human. It was an incredibly humbling process. He didn't claim special privileges. Instead, he lived a selfless, obedient life and then died a selfless, obedient death—and the worst kind of death at that: a crucifixion.
HUMILITY = SETTING MYSELF ASIDE AND TRUSTING THE FATHER MORE THAN I TRUST MYSELF
Philippians 4:13 - I can do all things through him who gives me strength.
LESS OF MY EGO = MORE ROOM FOR RESPONDING TO WHAT THE FATHER HAS PREPARED
1 Peter 5:6 (NIV) - Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand
Romans 12:3 (NIV) - Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought
“Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
What Child Is This
What child is this who laid to rest
On Mary's lap is sleeping
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
While shepherds watch are keeping
This this is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste haste to bring Him laud
The babe the son of Mary
Why lies He in such mean estate
Where ox and ass are feeding
Good Christian fear for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading
Nails spear shall pierce him through
The cross be borne for me for you
Hail hail the Word made flesh
The babe the son of Mary
So bring Him incense gold and myrrh
Come peasant king to own Him
The King of kings salvation brings
Let loving hearts enthrone Him
Raise raise the song on high
The virgin sings her lullaby
Joy joy for Christ is born
The babe the son of Mary
Confession & Forgiveness
Pastor: O Jesus! Meek and humble of heart, born in a humble stable and placed in a manger, hear our prayer.
All: From the desire of being esteemed, deliver me Jesus
From the desire of being extolled, deliver me Jesus
From the desire of being honored, deliver me Jesus
From the desire of being praised, deliver me Jesus
From the desire of being preferred, deliver me Jesus
From the desire of being consulted, deliver me Jesus
From the desire of being approved, deliver me Jesus.
Pastor: Having made humble confession of your sins, God has heard your prayer and through Christ’s sacrifice you have been delivered from sin, death, and the power of the devil. Your sins are forgiven through our Savior who humbled Himself and became obedient to death - even death on a cross!
Pastor: O Lord of grace and mercy, teach us by Your Holy Spirit to follow the example of Your Son in true humility, that we may withstand the temptations of the devil and with pure hearts and minds avoid ungodly pride;
All: Through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
Prayer for Humility
If you are in need of prayer, we would love the opportunity to pray with you! You can post a prayer on our online prayer wall, or submit a private prayer to our prayer team.
Communion
The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod holds the Biblical teaching that in Communion we receive the true body and blood of Jesus Christ with the bread and wine for the forgiveness of sins. If you are a baptized Christian who has been instructed in the Biblical teaching of the real presence of the Christ in this meal and grace through faith in Christ, and if you agree with our confession of faith, please join with the fellowship of disciples in Holy Communion.
“Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves.” (1 Corinthians 11:28-29)
The Lord’s Prayer
All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
Blessing
1 Peter 5:6-7 (NIV) - Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
Away In A Manger
Away in a manger
No crib for His bed
The little Lord Jesus
Laid down His sweet head
The stars in the bright sky
Looked down where He lay
The little Lord Jesus
Asleep on the hay
The cattle are lowing
The poor baby wakes
But little Lord Jesus
No crying He makes
I love Thee Lord Jesus
Look down from the sky
And stay by my side
'Til morning is nigh
Be near me Lord
Be near me Lord
Be near me Lord
Be near me Lord
Be near me Lord
Be near me Lord Jesus
I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever
And love me I pray
Bless all the dear children
In Thy tender care
And take us to heaven
To live with You there
