Invocation
Turn to Joy
Pastor: Over and over, Scripture encourages us to pray even in times of suffering, agony, distress, anguish, pain, sadness, grief, and sorrow:
All: “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”
(Romans 12:12)
Pastor: Turn to God; turn to joy:
All: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him.”
(Romans 15:13)
Pastor: Just before His arrest and betrayal, Jesus told His followers: “Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.”
All: "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."
(Psalm 23:6)
Goodness Of God
I love You Lord
Oh Your mercy never fails me
All my days
I've been held in Your hands
From the moment that I wake up
Until I lay my head
I will sing of the goodness of God
All my life You have been faithful
All my life You have been so so good
With every breath that I am able
I will sing of the goodness of God
I love Your voice
You have led me through the fire
In darkest night
You are close like no other
I've known You as a father
I've known You as a friend
I have lived in the goodness of God
All my life You have been faithful
All my life You have been so so good
With every breath that I am able
I will sing of the goodness of God
Your goodness is running after
It’s running after me
Your goodness is running after
It’s running after me
With my life laid down
I’m surrendered now
I give You everything
Your goodness is running after
It's running after me
Your goodness is running after
It’s running after me
Your goodness is running after
It’s running after me
With my life laid down
I’m surrendered now
I give You everything
Your goodness is running after
It's running after me
All my life You have been faithful
All my life You have been so so good
With every breath that I am able
I will sing of the goodness of God
All my life You have been faithful
All my life You have been so so good
With every breath that I am able
I will sing of the goodness of God
I will sing of the goodness of God
Scripture Reading
2 Corinthians 1:3-7 (NIV) - Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ. If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort.
STP KIDS Dismissal
STP KIDS is the Children’s Ministry at St. Peter’s Edina, designed for all children from 6 months to 10 years old (Grade 5). Older children are welcome to participate as helpers. Our vision is to partner with parents in raising up a generation of children that will seek their God-given Kingdom mission and impact their world for Jesus!
Message
Suffering breaks the heart of God.
John 16:20 (ESV) - Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.
John 16:21-22 (ESV) - When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.
John 16:24 (ESV) - Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.
John 16:33 (ESV) - “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world."
Romans 12:15 (ESV) - Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.
Revelation 21:4 (ESV) - “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning nor crying nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away."
1 Peter 5:10-11 (NIV) - And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever and ever. Amen.
Abide With Me
Abide with me
Fast falls the eventide
The darkness deepens
Lord with me abide
When other helpers fail
And comforts flee
Help of the helpless
O abide with me
I need Thy presence
Ev'ry passing hour
What but Thy grace can
Foil the tempter's pow'r
Who like Thyself
My Guide and Stay can be
Through cloud and sunshine
O abide with me
Swift to its close
Ebbs out life's little day
Earth's joys grow dim
Its glories pass away
Change and decay
In all around I see
O Thou who changest not
Abide with me
I fear no foe with
Thee at hand to bless
Ill's have no weight
And tears no bitterness
Where is death's sting
Where grave thy victory
I triumph still
If Thou abide with me
Confession: The Book of Nehemiah
Nehemiah 8:10 - “This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”
Communion
The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod holds the Biblical teaching that in Communion we receive the true body and blood of Jesus Christ with the bread and wine for the forgiveness of sins. If you are a baptized Christian who has been instructed in the Biblical teaching of the real presence of the Christ in this meal and grace through faith in Christ, and if you agree with our confession of faith, please join with the fellowship of disciples in Holy Communion.
“Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves.” (1 Corinthians 11:28-29)
The Lord’s Prayer
All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
Blessing
John 16:33 (NIV) - "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."
Yes I Will
I count on one thing
The same God that never fails
Will not fail me now
You won't fail me now
In the waiting
The same God who's never late
Is working all things out
You're working all things out
Yes I will lift You high
In the lowest valley
Yes I will bless Your name
Yes I will sing for joy
When my heart is heavy
All my days yes I will
I count on one thing
The same God that never fails
Will not fail me now
You won't fail me now
In the waiting
The same God who's never late
Is working all things out
You're working all things out
Yes I will lift You high
In the lowest valley
Yes I will bless Your name
Yes I will sing for joy
When my heart is heavy
All my days yes I will
For all my days yes I will
I choose to praise
To glorify glorify
The name of all names
That nothing can stand against
I choose to praise
To glorify glorify
The name of all names
That nothing can stand against
I choose to praise
To glorify glorify
The name of all names
That nothing can stand against
I choose to praise
To glorify glorify
The name of all names
That nothing can stand against
Yes I will lift You high
In the lowest valley
Yes I will bless Your name
Yes I will sing for joy
When my heart is heavy
All my days yes I will
For all my days yes I will
For all my days yes I will
