The Weekly Prayer Project - Washed Clean

Welcome!

Detergent does a pretty good job of getting dirty clothes clean. But what about the stains that settle deep within our hearts?

David's prayer in Psalm 51 points us to the Savior who blots out our sins, washes away our guilt, and purifies our hearts. Take some time to reflect on the life-changing gift of God's mercy and remember that in Christ, you are truly and completely Washed Clean.

Greeting and Announcements

Washed Clean

A confession of sins based on Psalm 51

Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
All: Amen.

Pastor: Have mercy on us, O God, according to Your unfailing love.
All: According to Your great compassion, blot out my transgressions.

Pastor: Wash away all our iniquity.
All: Cleanse me from my sin.

Pastor: For we know our transgressions.
All: My sin is ever before me.

Pastor: Against You, You only, have we sinned and done what is evil in Your sight.
All: I confess that I am by nature sinful and unclean. I have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed.

Pastor: We cannot cleanse ourselves or remove the stain of our sin.
All: Lord Jesus, wash me, and I will be clean. Purify me, and I will be whiter than snow.

Pastor: Create in us clean hearts, O God.
All: And renew a right spirit within me.

(Silent Reflection)

Pastor: Almighty God, in His mercy, has given His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for you. Through His cross, your sins are blotted out. Through the washing of Baptism, you have been united with Christ and clothed in His righteousness. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
All: Amen.

Pastor: Wash us, Lord, and we shall be clean.
All: We have been washed clean by the mercy of God in Jesus Christ. Amen.

Who You Say I Am

Who am I that the highest King
Would welcome me
I was lost but He brought me in
Oh His love for me
Oh His love for me

Who the Son sets free
Oh is free indeed
I'm a child of God
Yes I am

Free at last He has ransomed me
His grace runs deep
While I was a slave to sin
Jesus died for me
Yes He died for me

Who the Son sets free
Oh is free indeed
I'm a child of God
Yes I am
In my Father's house
There's a place for me
I'm a child of God
Yes I am

I am chosen not forsaken
I am who You say I am
You are for me not against me
I am who You say I am
I am chosen not forsaken
I am who You say I am
You are for me not against me
I am who You say I am
I am who You say I am

Who the Son sets free
Oh is free indeed
I'm a child of God
Yes I am
In my Father's house
There's a place for me
I'm a child of God
Yes I am

Scripture Reading

Isaiah 1:16-18 (NIV) - Wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight; stop doing wrong. Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.

“Come now, let us settle the matter,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.

Message

Psalm 51:1-2 (NLT) - Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin.

"Blot out the stain of my sins"
‍ ‍"Wash me clean from my guilt"
‍ ‍"Purify me from my sin"

Psalm 51:1 - “Have mercy on me O God”

Psalm 51:3-4, 7 (NLT) - For I recognize my rebellion; it haunts me day and night. Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight. You will be proved right in what you say, and your judgment against me is just…Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

Washed Clean in Baptism

Pastor: We cannot wash away our own sins. We cannot cleanse our own hearts or remove our own guilt. So we pray to the Lord: wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.
All: Wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

Pastor: What benefits does Baptism give?
All: It works forgiveness of sins, rescues from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe this.

Pastor: How can water do such great things?
All: Certainly not just water, but the Word of God in and with the water does these things, along with the faith which trusts this Word of God in the water.

Pastor: What does such baptizing with water indicate?
All: It indicates that the Old Adam in us should by daily contrition and repentance be drowned and die with all sins and evil desires.

Pastor: And what else does Baptism indicate?
All: That a new man should daily emerge and arise to live before God in righteousness and purity forever.

Pastor: Through the cross of Christ, the stain of sin is blotted out.
All: Through the washing of Baptism, God has claimed us as His own.

Pastor: Through the mercy of God, our guilt is removed.
All: Through the grace of God, we are washed clean.

Pastor: Brothers and sisters in Christ, remember your Baptism,
All: where Jesus invited us to be washed clean!

Pastor: Wash us, Lord, and we shall be clean.
All: We are washed clean because of God's unfailing love, His great compassion, and the saving work of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Pastor: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
All: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Prayer

If you are in need of prayer, we would love the opportunity to pray with you! You can post a prayer on our online prayer wall, or submit a private prayer to our prayer team. Speak with Pastor Mark if you desire personal prayer.

The Lord’s Prayer

All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Blessing

1 Corinthians 6:11 (LB) - "But now your sins are washed away, and you are set apart for God; and he has accepted you because of what the Lord Jesus Christ and the Spirit of our God have done for you."

Holy Water

God I'm on my knees again
God I'm begging please again
I need You Oh I need You
Walking down these desert roads
Water for my thirsty soul
I need You Oh I need You

Your forgiveness
Is like sweet sweet honey on my lips
Like the sound of a symphony to my ears
Like holy water on my skin

Dead man walking slave to sin
I wanna know about being born again
I need You Oh God I need You
So take me to the riverside
Take me under baptize
I need You Oh God I need You

Your forgiveness
Is like sweet sweet honey on my lips
Like the sound of a symphony to my ears
Like holy water on my skin

I don't wanna abuse Your grace
God I need it every day
It's the only thing that ever really
Makes me wanna change
I don't wanna abuse Your grace
God I need it every day
It's the only thing that ever really
Makes me wanna change
I don't wanna abuse Your grace
God I need it every day
It's the only thing that ever really
Makes me wanna change
I don't wanna abuse Your grace
God I need it every day
It's the only thing that ever really
Makes me wanna change

Your forgiveness
Is like sweet sweet honey on my lips
Like the sound of a symphony to my ears
Like holy water
Your forgiveness
Is like sweet sweet honey on my lips
Like the sound of a symphony to my ears
Like holy water on my skin
It’s like holy water on my skin
It’s like holy water
